Peace Building
PPCD Peace Building Activities
The Peace Building Sub-Committee (PBC) is one of the committees under the PPCD programme. The committee is made up of representatives from PPCD and partner NGOs: New Nigeria Foundation (NNF), Morgan Smart Development Foundation (MSDF), Leadership Initiative for Transformation and Empowerment (LITE-Africa) and ASelf Help and Rural Development Association (SHERDA). The representatives are usually persons with hands-on experience in peace building and conflict management. The committee’s modus operandi is to build the capacity of RDC peace building committee members, GMOU peace building committee members and other relevant stakeholders to be able to identify and proactively address conflict issues and build peace in their respective RDCs / communities and the GMOU process. The committee holds meetings once every quarter of the year.
Peace Building Objectives
The specific objective of the PBC is to improve RDCs ability to build peace and manage conflicts. The desired results of the committee include identification, prevention and establishment of early warning systems; improvement of conflict management mechanisms to effectively manage and resolve conflicts; and building the capacity of the RDCs to design and develop peace building initiatives.
Some of the activities of the PBC so far include:
- Peace Building Sub-Committee Meetings
The committee meets regularly to discuss strategies for achieving the peace building objectives of the programme. It has also provided support to the Peace Building Committees of the different RDCs through various capacity building programmes.
- Capacity Building Programme on Peace Monitoring and Reporting for Peace Actors in the RDC's communities.
In collaboration with Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND) we developed a capacity building programme on Peace Monitoring and Reporting for peace actors resident in the RDC communities. Through the programme, conflict monitors in specific GMOU areas are trained to provide conflict early warning data for conflict prevention and mitigation efforts. They were taught ways to report issues to the Integrated Peacebuilding and Development Unit (IPDU) SMS platform for further analysis and use.
- Capacity Building Programme on Peacebuilding, Mediation, Negotiation & Management
This training is aimed at developing individual capacity and building knowledge on peacebuilding, mediation, negotiation and management.
- Capacity Building Programme on Conflict Sensitivity
